Apparently the list of top 100 spiritually significant films is just the thing you need “if you want to explore and wrestle with spiritual issues and questions in the wide world of international filmmaking” and “is a monument to a history of people speaking a different language about eternal concepts, testing this new grammar of light, texture, and rhythm as it contacts the contours of faith and reality.”

Well, to be honest, I’m not sure about all the above, but the list is interesting to browse and get possible movie night ideas from. Sadly, after a quick scroll, I think I’ve seen about 5 of these movies. I found the list after googling info on Chariots of Fire which I just watched for the first time this past weekend. Good little movie. Must see. It’s surprising to see religion/Christianity treated so explicitly. I do enjoy what’s perhaps the most well-known line from the movie apart from its theme song:

I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.

3D Clipboard September 19th, 2008

If you’ve not known the joys of 3D Clipboard, now’s your chance. It’s a tiny little utility that sits in your task bar and keeps a list of what you’ve copied, that is, your clipboard. It’s a 3D clipboard in that when you click the icon in the task bar, it pops up a list of previously copied text for you to view and select what you want to be active. It comes in real handy.

Lamentably, I don’t think this little guy is still under active development, but it works in Windows (XP and Vista), so what else do you need? I’m making a post here so that this might be a little safe-haven, no frills download spot for 3D Clipboard. (I can’t stand searching endlessly for a little piece of software whose developer’s website should be the first result on Google. Further, those web sites like Softpedia, etc are rather annoying, which seems to be the only other place to get this little guy at the moment.)

Carphone September 19th, 2008

Though this isn’t as cool as this you should be aware of a carphone sighting tonight at the local Wal-Mart. Minding my own business, in my car, waiting on my wife, on my laptop, the chap who owned the car parked next to us rolls up with his shopping bags, flings open the door, I glance, and there’s a carphone, stately attached to the floor of the four-door sedan where a gear shifter normally resides. It’s 2008! Amazing. Well, I did listen to a Moms Mabley record last night.

Chakalaka September 11th, 2008

How to Talk About Blogs September 11th, 2008

This post is going to be similar to a previous post which I published concerning the phrase “so therefore.” There’s further discussion of “so therefore” over on the WordReference.com forums where I started a thread about it.

Today I would like to talk about talking about blogging. There seems to be some confusion. I hear people, most commonly professors at my school, refer to individual blog posts as a blog. This is not only incorrect but misleading. Consider the following:

“Yesterday I read a new blog by Al Mohler.”

Upon hearing this phrase I immediately begin to wonder whether Al Mohler has started blogging at a new location other than albertmohler.com because “blog” and “a blog” usually refer, in a collective sense, to an entire set of blog posts. For example, you are reading my blog at KataDrew.com. Specifically, you are reading a (blog) post entitled “How to Talk About Blogs” on my blog KataDrew. You are not reading a new blog on my blog. That is imprecise, for I only have one blog and it is at KataDrew.com. My blog is, however, made up of many posts.

Posts are the specific, individual units which make up a blog. If I may belabor the point futher: blogs do not make up blogs but posts make up blogs. Note in the images herein displayed the usage of the word “post” in one blogging platform’s administration section (Wordpress).

One possible exception is an aggregated group blog such as that at Said at Southeastern (sebts.blogspot.com) which aggregates posts from several different blogs to make up it’s own blog in a sense, though it has it’s own posts. Still, you’ll want to refer to a post you read on Said at Southeastern not a blog you read on Said at Southeastern.

So to rephrase the initial above-quoted example to be correct and precise you’ll want to say something to this effect:

“Yesterday I read a new post on Al Mohler’s blog.”

Or

“Yesterday I read a new post by Al Mohler.”

May this help you avoid not only a personal pet peeve of mine, but imprecise language attendant with using “blog” to refer to both a blog and a post on a blog.

September Facebook Friends Mix September 10th, 2008

Here’s a mix I cooked up for you of some popular tunes which I’ve been enjoying over the last couple of months. The mix progression centers on avoiding key clashes, a new skill I’m trying to pick up. So, those who are super sensitive to keys and key clashes, please, if you hear dodgey keys mixing together, let me know so I can improve. Slap this mix on your MP3 and go for a run, and most definitely if you really enjoy any one song, buy it to support the producer (e.g. Beatport.com). Enjoy!

01 Eric Prydz - Pjanoo (Club Mix)
02 Kaskade - 4 AM (Adam K & Soha Mix)
03 Dobenbeck - Please Don’t Go (Chris Reece Mix)
04 Jerome Isma-Ae and Strobe - Monkey Square (Original Mix)
05 Delerium feat. Sarah McLachlan - Silence (Niels van Gogh vs. Thomas Gold Remix)
06 Alex Gold - Give It Up/Reaction (Adam K, Soha & Alex Gold Remix)
