Annual Wake County Public Library Book Sale

When my mom called while I was on the road, telling her that I was headed to an abandoned Kmart for a book sale sounded a lot sketchier than it turned out to be. The sale: the 2008 Wake County Public Library Book Sale.

The annual Wake County Public Library Book Sale will be held for the third year in the former Super Kmart building at 4121 New Bern Ave. , in east Raleigh, on US Highway 64 Business. The site is in a shopping center anchored by Golden Corral on the street-front. More than 300,000 books will be available for sale in the largest sale of its kind in the Southeast.

Paperbacks $1. Hardbacks $4. But if you can contain yourself, the prices drop every day.

  • Wednesday, November 19: noon till 9 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday, November 20 and 21: 10 a.m. till 9 p.m.
    • Prices the first three days are $4 for hardbound books; $1 for paperbacks.
  • Saturday, November 22: 8 a.m. till 8 p.m.
    • Prices on Saturday are $2 for hardbound books; 50 cents for paperbacks.
  • Sunday, November 23: 10 a.m. till 6 p.m.

I walked away with 18 books and, yes, I feel like a bandit after paying only $18.

This sale actually comes at a great time (but when could a massive book sale not come at a good time?) considering this is the week of the annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society, a gathering which boasts its amazingly low, steal-of-a-deal convention book prices. It, however, is in Rhode Island. My book sale? An abandoned Kmart!

So, if you’re a Southeastern student like me, get your buns down to that Kmart. Take cash and/or your checkbook as these are the only accepted forms of payment. It’s the perfect place to buy any classic that you’ve been wanting and meaning to get a copy of (e.g., Pilgrim’s Progress).

Church Gone Missing

Christians who want to question the effectiveness of a church sometimes jokingly ask if a church disappeared from a community, would anyone notice. The answer in this case is no.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – A church has vanished from the Russian village where it stood for almost 200 years, the local diocese said Tuesday.

The Church of Christ’s Resurrection, in the central Russian village of Komarovo, was built in 1809 but in early October someone took it away brick by brick, Father Vitaly a spokesman for the local Russian Orthodox Church, told Reuters.

“We have sent a letter to local prosecutors,” he said. “Who exactly did this, the investigation will show.”

The church was in an isolated area only occasionally visited by clergymen, so the disappearance was not immediately noticed.

The church was in an isolated area only occasionally visited by clergymen, so the disappearance was not immediately noticed.

Komarovo is in the Ivanovo region, about 300 km (186.4 miles) north-east of Moscow. The church was not in use but clergy had been considering resuming services there, the Ivanovo-Voznesenskaya and Kineshemskaya diocese said in a statement on its Internet site.

A survey of the large, two-storey church a few months ago found that it was structurally sound, but now all that remains are the foundations and sections of walls, the statement said.

Thieves routinely make off with church property in rural Russia, where unemployment, petty crime and alcoholism are widespread.

Criminals target religious icons stored in churches because they can fetch a good price, and church buildings are dismantled to provide building materials.

“This is not an isolated case,” said Father Vitaly. “In many villages in central Russia sites of historical interest are being dismantled and people suffer by being deprived of their cultural heritage.”

Fire Conference: Benny Hinn in Raleigh

In college I went to hear Michael Moore speak. Earlier in the year I heard Hillary Clinton. About a month ago I hear Shane Claiborne. My philosophy is if someone notable in any regard comes near me, I’ll go hear them speak. So get ready Raleigh for the Fire Conference with Benny Hinn!

The event’s free with pre-registration. I’m not sure what that makes the cost at the door (?), but I went ahead and pre-registered on his site for four people for the 7:00PM Friday session at the Progress Energy Center. That’s next Friday, August 29.

If other bloggers in the area read this and are planning on going, we should get a syncroblog going with after thoughts. Leave a comment showing your interest. If not, it’ll just be me!

Jesus for President: Shane Claiborne in Raleigh

Jesus for President

Jesus for President

Shane Claiborne’s Jesus for President book tour continues this Tuesday (July 22) with a stopover in Raleigh at the First Baptist Church Raleigh which is apparently sponsored by the Triangle Mennonite churches.

It starts at 7:00pm and is free to everyone. I’ll be there and if you’ll be there, wear a red shirt so I’ll know you read this. I hope to offer thoughts on the evening in the coming days. Not an event to be missed if for no other reason than to be challenged.

More info available at the JesusforPresident.org.
